Parrot Training: The First "Step"
If you've never owned a parrot before, starting the process of training your new parrot can be a bit overwhelming. It doesn't matter if you have a young bird or an older one; you can begin training right away by teaching your bird some simple behaviors. In my opinion, one of the best things you can teach your parrot is to have a reliable step up response. In other words, you tell the bird to "step up" and it should immediately step onto your hand.
So why is teaching step-up important to you and your parrot? The main reason is that it makes it so much easier to get your bird out of its cage. Another is that parrots sometimes climb up on shoulders whether you want them to or not, so step-up makes it easier to get them off of a shoulder. When being removed from a shoulder, a few parrots may attempt to bite. However, with the step-up command this becomes less of a problem. You will find that a bird that has learned the step-up command is easier to handle in unfamiliar or even dangerous situations such as if the bird would ever escape your home accidentally. Plus, it teaches the parrot to cooperate with you, which as you can imagine is an important advantage as well. So all in all, the step-up command is a great place to start when first beginning to train your parrot.
Step-up Training
Let's now take a look at the steps used to teach your bird to step onto your hand. First, slowly move your finger so that it is in front of your bird's feet and in a regular voice say the words "step up." Remember that your bird doesn't understand our language, so it will learn what these words mean over time. For now, you can gently push your finger against your bird's lower stomach area to push it backwards just a little. If you continue to press the bird gently backwards, you'll find that it should then step up willingly to your hand. Just as soon as the bird steps up to your hand, let your bird know it did the right thing by giving it plenty of praise. Next, continue to practice step-up a few more times by asking your bird to step up from one finger to the other. This is called "laddering" for obvious reasons.
Parrot Still Doesn't Willingly Step Onto My Hand
There are a few particularly stubborn parrots that clamp down on the perch with their talons and hang on for dear life. What they are thinking as they do this is anyone's guess, but here is what you can do. While continuing to hold your one hand in front of the bird, move your other hand behind the bird and hold it a few inches behind it as if you are about to pick it up from behind. What this does is it gives the parrot a choice of stepping up or being picked up from behind, something that most birds do not enjoy. For most parrots, the choice is an easy one since it would rather step up than be picked up in this manner. When your bird steps up, be sure to let it know how wonderful it is for choosing to step onto your hand.
Practice Makes Perfect
It is highly recommended that you continue to work with your bird on a regular basis. Practice daily at first, and then do semi-regular practice sessions throughout the bird's life to reinforce this behavior. If you do this, you'll find your bird is easier to handle and it won't be nearly as bad when the "terrible twos" hit. And just think - you are now on the path to becoming an expert in training your parrot.
