How to get a terra cotta bowl off a hump mould? (pottery)?
I've made a terra cotta slab work bowl on a hump mould and I dont know how to get it off. It is somewhat fragile and I'd rather not break it. Potters, help! There is cheesecloth between the plastic mould and the form.
Don't let your bowl dry past the leather-hard state. That is when it is firm enough to hold it's shape and not slump, but not totally dry (you can carve it and the consistency is like a hard cheese). If you let it dry totally on a "hump" mold, then it will crack because the clay shrinks as it dries and the mold will not give.
There are hump molds and slump molds. The slab goes over a hump mold, whereas the slab fits into the slump mold (like a pastry dough going into a pie plate). You can let a piece get bone dry in a "slump" mold and it will not crack.
Hopefully your cheesecloth extends past the edges of the bowl. Gently take hold of the edges of the cheesecloth and lift up until you can get your hand under the bowl. If you have a second person to help, you could flip the mold over with one person holding the mold and the other holding the bowl. Only do this when the piece is leather-hard.
Hump/slump molds can be any material like plaster, plastic, metal, wood, etc. If the mold is non porous, then you need a release agent like cheesecloth, plastic, Pam spray, vaseline, etc.
