What do the silver dots along the outside rim of a DJ turntable do?
I know that they are used to measure the speed of a spinning record. I guess my real question is: Why are these speeds so important to DJ's?
Records are recorded to play at a very specific speed. A little slow, it sounds slow. Too fast, it's more like the chipmunks. Maybe most people would never know the difference, but a lot of them would and it would bother them to no end. So they pay more for a turntable that they can adjust, to make sure it's playing at the correct speed.
The dots along the rim are specifically placed. With flourescent lights, it acts as a strobe. At the correct speed, the dots would appear to be standing still (even though they're really moving). But at the wrong speed, the dots would appear to be slowly moving in one direction or the other, depending on whether it was fast or slow.
If you've ever watched an old movie western, you might have seen where the stagecoach wheels appear to be spinning backwards. That is the strobe effect between the frame rate of the original movie and the different frame rate of television.
