How do I keep my refrigerator cooling elements and my freezer box from frosting?
I am renting an apartment which came with an older refrigerator/freezer, and I'll be moving across the country in about three months, so I don't want to buy a new fridge, but my coolilng elements in the fridge recently starting frosting up, and even after melting the huge chunk of ice and cleaning it out, it immediately starting frosting up again after I turned it back on. This is not a "frost free" fridge, btw. Is there some old-fashioned way to keep this from happening? I have the same problem with the freezer (one of those older "freezer box" types).
The way it cools is that the freon passes thorough the freezer and then goes into the refig section. If the freezer is full of frost that makes the freon coming Into the refig colder making an ice ball on the cooling plate in the refig.
If the doors don't seal or the light stays on in the refig you will get excessive frost build up. To check the doors, take a dollar bill and close the door on part of it. Pull it out. If you don't feel some resistance, the door isn't sealing there. If the gasket isn't riped than you should be able to adjust the door to make it seal again. Don't forget to check the gasket at the bottom of the door.
There's no way to make it stop frosting up. You can just slow it down. The less your in it the less it frosts.
