Can I paint over stained wodd without having to sand?
I have a portable kitchen Island with a stainless steel top with a drop down leaf. I wanted to change the color so I had sand the kitchen island and then stained it with a mineral oil. The kitchen Island came out so blotchy that it looks really horrible. I attempted to sand down the front of the kitchen island and re-apply the stain but same results. I need to save this island and wanted to know what can I do without having to resand as that did not work. I was thinking of painting the kitchen Island. What steps should I take?
You really should sand and then clean with dawn dish detergent. Use only a small amount of dawn mixed with water., it will help break down the rest of the oil. Do not use too much water. Allow it to dry thoroughly. Then try again if you want to stain. Some of the older finishes contained varnishes that are very hard to remove without use of paint and varnish remover. If you can ventilate well, you may be ahead to strip the wood. Remember oil and water don't mix. Since you have used oil, you cannot use a latex over it without a prime as Ninas post said. Good Luck
