How many white people actually owned slaves in the days of slavery?
I thought most of the slaves were on large Plantations that was run by 1 single white family, while most of the other white people were too poor to afford a slave.
In the 1860 census, only one slave holder had more than 1,000. Only 16 had 500-999.

Only the richest people could afford to maintain a small army of forced labor on a piece of property. They would have to have the coldest, cruelest overseers to keep that many people under their thumbs.
