What is the life span of a coconut palm tree?
Our palm tree has about a 7 ft. diameter base and stands about 75 ft. tall. When does it become dangerous to possibly fall over?
I have lived in the tropics and been a tropical grower for many years and yours is by far the largest Coconut tree I've ever heard of. Are you sure it's a Coconut? Are you sure of your measurements?
Coconut life expectancy is very dependent of its local conditions. As short as five or six years in unfavorable environment, to twenty years or more in a sheltered place. Most Coconuts expire due to storm damage - blown over and uprooted by wind, specially in light or sandy soil. Coconut varieties that have large crowns are most susceptible. The ones that die of old age or disease seldom fall over. They lose their fronds and growing point and become a large brown stick that can stand for many years.
There is no way to predict when your tree will fall over. Look for signs of diminshed vigor such as sparse leaf crown, discolored or deformed fronds, a reduction in the quantity and size of fruit, a large number of dry hollow roots at or near the surface, anything else that looks abnormal and unhealthy. These will be early sympoms of demise and a forewarning of death. Still it could be many years before the carcass falls over.
