I Love My New Furniture
Clark had borrowed our echo chainsaw a month ago. Well, this Saturday I was going to retrieve it one way or another. It's our chainsaw and we want it Saturday. The trees were unkempt without that chainsaw. Let Clark buy his own.
Wars begin over small problems like this I mused. A person is so inconsiderate about some inconsequential detail and as time passes the other person grows more and more irritated. Clark was one of those people, repeatedly.
I placed a bowl of fresh cut flowers on the beautiful surface of my new black dining room set. It looked like it came out of a magazine. I stood there admiring it. My friends were coming for a late lunch and I was still setting the table.
Lenore and Clark, her husband, lived right next door. I hoped to get the chance to bring up the borrowed chainsaw during lunch. It wouldn't be the easiest topic to include along with fashions and prices of food. I would try although it wouldn't be easy to fit it in the conversation.
Back in the kitchen, I added mayonaisse to the chicken salad I had made with macaroni and boiled eggs. Yes, it was cold enough. Martha Stewart couldn't have done better. I mentally patted myself on the back. The chicken salad would be served with croissants and lemon squares for dessert.
Well here they come I thought as I went in the hall to answer the front door. Jeana had on a pretty sage green blouse and diamond earrings. Ruba wore a yellow sweater and slacks set. Lenore wore jeans and a sweater. Jeana always wore jeans, even to church.
We chatted and I fixed a drink for each. Then we went into the dining room, I lit the candles and lunch was served. Jeana mentioned that her husband John would be cutting the grass this weekend and there was my opening. I told them Jerry would be cutting down some bushes that were obstructing the windows. I looked at Lenore and casually asked if Clark was finished with our chainsaw.
Sure she responded. He bought a poulan chainsaw last Saturday but forgot to return yours, she said. I smiled and asked her how that one worked as I dished up the salad. She said Clark seemed to like it fine. We chatted about price and warranties and then moved on to another topic. I guess both men got a good buy on their chainsaws.
