How many islands compose the Hawaii Island chain?
That depends on what you mean. When most people think of Hawai'i, they think of the eight main islands, Hawai'i, Maui, O'ahu, Kauai, Lana'i, Moloka'i, Ni'ihau and Kaho'olawe. Kaho'olawe, however, is uninhabited and Ni'ihau cannot be reached except through special permission as it is privately owned and kept as a preserve for its native people.
The chain itself is composed of 132 islands and atolls which extend from the Big Island to Midway. None of the other 124 islands are inhabited (with the exception of Midway, which is home only to temporary residents).
