All About Absinthe The Fairy
Absinthe or the Green Fairy
Absinthe the Green Fairy or La Fee Verte is an alcoholic drink with an interesting history. Developed as an elixir or tonic in the 18th century it is now one of the most controversial and famous drinks of all time.
Anise flavored and with an alcohol content of between 45 and 75% by volume, Absinthe is incredibly strong. It is called "La Fee Verte" or "Green Fairy" due to its emerald green color. This distilled liquor is made from herbs. Perhaps the most important herbs include wormwod, fennel, and green aniseed. The very famous Pernod Absinthe recipe was produced using herbs like hyssop, star anise, juniper, veronica, lemon balm, nutmeg, and dittany Henri-Louis Pernod was also the first person to commercially distill Absinthe. The psychoactive properties were attributed to herbs like wormwood, nutmeg, and in some cases calamus which some manufacturers used. Herbs in Absinthe release essential oils and this causes the louche effect when water is poured over the sugar on the Absinthe spoon. The oils are not water soluble and so cause the Absinthe to cloud or louche.

Absinthe is famous for inspiring many artists and writers associated with the Bohemian culture of the Montmartre area of Paris. Absinthe is mainly alcohol and ethanol and hence contains minute quantities of thujone. High alcohol content in Absinthe is deemed as dangerous and not thujone, this has been proved by studies and research conducted over the past several years.
