4 Tips to Successful Grape Vine Planting
Planting grapes offers the gardener so much more than the simple pleasures of gardening and digging in the dirt. Grape vines can live for hundreds of years (in some caese even for over a thousand years! ).
Tip # 1 - Know your location
Location is a key ingredient in planting grape vines.
Sunshine
There should be enough sunshine to help the grapes concentrate the sugar and bring sweetness to the fruits.
Soil
Grapes should be planted in soil that is well drained. If there is standing water around the roots the vine will contract diseases. Soil must be healthy. To have a healthy soil, add compost before planting. However, you must also remember NOT to OVER fertilize.
Tip # 2 – Plan Before You Plant
Before planting, take some time to do a little planning. When planning to plant different varieties of grapes, it is wise to group plants by variety. This will make maintenance a lot easier especially during pruning. Different varieties grow a different growth rates. Also, different species are susceptible to different insect pests and diseases. Finally since different varieties have different growth habits it is important to space your grapes accordingly.
The requirements in building trellis would also differ depending on what type of grapes you plan to plant. European vines grow low to the ground with the fruit at the top whereas hybrids grow tall with fruit clusters bunched at the bottom of the vine.
Tip # 3 - Water Generously
After you have planted your grape vines, water them generously, but don't drown them. If you live in a particularly dry climate, watering them every day until they are established is essential. If young vines are allowed to dry out completely, they probably won't make it until the next growing season. Water the vines in the early morning or late in the evening to be most effective. It is not effective to water your vines during the heat of the day because much of the water will be lost due to evaporation. Water on the leaves can also cause the leaves to get sunburned.
Tip # 4 - Pruning Is Important
Pruning is a very important step in the maintenance of planting grapes, especially during the dormant season. If a vine is pruned properly it will have one thick stem and two primary branches trained along the trellis. New shoots, or canes, will support the development of grape clusters each year. New shoots however, must be trimmed regularly to maintain the integrity of the grape vine growing structure. If you do not prune the vines, they will get tangled and the vine will not be able to get enough sunlight. Grape production will begin within the first two years of planting. By the third year after planting the vines, the grape clusters should be developing nicely on the young vines.
Allow the Grapes to Ripen Naturally
Grapes do best when fully ripened on the vine. To tell if the grapes are ready to harvest, you can taste for desired sweetness. For a precise result, test the specific gravity of the grapes with a hydrometer. You can purchase this instrument at your local stores specializing in wine making. A specific gravity of 1.1 indicates a fully ripened grape with sufficiently concentrated sugar for great wine.
Growing grape vines is a fun and fascinating hobby. Planting and harvesting will bring you much pleasure and joy. It takes patience and dedication to succeed in this.
