Learning to drink beer in moderation?
I'm 21.5 years old and in college, but I don't drink. Many of my friends are social drinkers and they sometimes invite me to the bar after an exam or after finishing a project. Since I don't drink I always have to turn down the offers and the opportunity to hang out. I have made up my mind and I would like to be able to enjoy a few drinks with my friends. However, the taste of beer is too bitter for me, and I just can't seem to like it. Whenever I have tried drinking the flavor is just not there. All I can taste is the bitterness.
My question to you, then, is how should I start to drink? I bought a pack of Guinness because it seems very popular at my school. And no I don't plan on getting drunk, I'll probably just have a few beers every month or none at all.
Also, is there a temperature that beers taste better? And are there things I must do in order to appreciate the taste of a good beer?
Some people just don't like beer. Just as some people don't like red wine or champagne. Everyone has their own tastes, and if you are 21.5 and in college, you should have the maturity to say to your friends: "No, thanks, I don't like beer."
If they give you a hard time, find new friends because these individuals would be very immature. If you are intent on hanging out with them though, drink what you DO like the taste of. Every bar has water, soda, and juice. You will get the taste you like, save money, and not ruin your health either.
The whole idea of "learning to like beer" just sounds a little off to me, like you are giving in to peer pressure. You really just need to rise above that, and do your own thing. In a few years, you will be out in the real world and will have to stand your ground every day, living based on your own beliefs. You sound like you already have the maturity to do that now, and it is just a matter of a conscious choice on your part whether you will take the high road and do the right thing, or lower yourself to the level of others to fit in. Your choice. Choose wisely!
