Orientalism: can someone put in their own words what is Orientalism? Is it wrong to call eastern Asia?
I read an excerpt from the book of Said, but the concept was difficult for me to understand. He writes that the term refers to the Middle East rather than Asia. However, I also read somewhere that the term evolved to include parts of Asia as Westerners have explored parts of Asia. In addition, Some Asians are offended if you call them Eastern. Why?
Wikipedia is not always accurate, but in this case, I feel give a good explanation of the origins of the word "East". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orient Originally it meant the Middle East. This is because the Europeans first encountered. Later (fairly recent in human history), they discovered and began to trade with the inhabitants of the Far East (China, Japan, etc.). Thus, the "Orient" included mainly those in the East and is now commonly identified with people from the Far East, because there is a little more about them and the West had a long history of occupation / dominant right pieces of the Far East. Some Asians are offended if you call them oriental, because it brings connotations of this time of colonial oppression and others (like the British and Hong Kong / India or French and Vietnam). I do not care b / c I think it's just another case of policy gone amuck corectness. "Asian" is better simply b / c it more accurate and East is kind of a familiar term and archaic. I will not get my panties in a bunch if someone calls me "oriental" good.
